Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 1: Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition

The debut episode of the season released on April 1st this year and what a way to celebrate April Fools’ Day! This episode bends the formula by having Pim and Allan decide to help Gwimbly, a failed 90s video game mascot who is down on his luck (and resorts to Cameo to make some money). Charlie stays in the office to try to help James, a violent man who cannot be pleased.

But the funniest part of the episode has to be Gwimbly himself. The distinctive animation style helps it stand out. And the concept of a washed-up or forgotten gaming mascot is specific, but it resonates with many viewers.

This first episode was really fun and set a great standard for the rest of the season. It also helps that many social media users have collectively decided to trick each other into thinking that Gwimbly is a totally real video game mascot. Things like Gwimbly memes and animations took the internet by storm for a while.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 2: Mr. President

I couldn’t help but groan when I saw the title of this episode. I feared a polarizing foray into the world of American politics. My fears were allayed once the conflict centered around a gleefully condemned presidential race. Said race is between an incompetent man-child, President Jimble, and a deranged TV celebrity, Mr. Frog.

You could draw all the real-world parallels you want, but the episode makes it clear that neither candidate is cut out for the presidency, as demonstrated by Jimble’s disgusting ineptitude and Mr. Frog’s murderous rampage.

Still, I noticed a pattern here. Seemingly recycled elements from episodes of the first season. Just like in the first episode 2, Pim and Charlie end up helping important public figures (Mr. Frog as opposed to Jimble) and things don’t go as planned. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything good if ideas are already being recycled.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 3: Allan Adventure

If episode 1 bent the formula, this episode ditches it completely. This time we just follow Allan trying to get a box of paper clips. This leads to crazy action scenes including helicopter chases, undead pirate battles, sasquatch and more.

It was funny, but I felt like the writers and animation team were just flexing their creative muscles to come up with all kinds of crazy events. Events that lead to Allan and his owner hanging out smoking weed and filling their bellies with diet soda while playing Burnout Revenge for the PS2. No, really.

This episode got a lot of laughs from me but didn’t really have much substance. There were a lot of fun moments and this was one of my favorites for the season. But I could understand why some viewers might be disappointed by it.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 4: Um, Will The Boss Find Love?

This episode is about Mr. Boss and his new demon wife. But things are not as they seem. Said demonic wife is apparently a succubus who wants to steal Mr. Boss’s soul in service to her father Satan.

Like episode 4 of the first season, this is an off-season Halloween special. Even the horror elements are delivered in a similar fashion to the Halloween special, using mysterious animation styles and jump lessons.

However, I think I preferred the jokes in this episode to those in the first Halloween special. Overall, it was a fun watch that explored clichés in a very funny way.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 5: Brother’s Egg

Brother’s Egg returns to the original format of Pim and Charlie helping someone with a smile. Except this time, the recipient of their help is Dr. A psychotic, mad scientist who attempts to create a homunculus with a chicken egg and human DNA.

The jokes this time around mix edginess with the show’s unique voice to create an episode quite reminiscent of the first season. While sticking closely to the season’s recipe, the episode still feels fresh when placed in the midst of these other formula-defying adventures.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 6: Charlie, Pim and Bill vs the alien

This episode might just be my favorite of the entire season. This time, Charlie and Pim (alongside Bill) are abducted by aliens. But this situation turns from life and death to the alien side, with peer pressure the real danger.

This episode combines a lot of my favorite aspects of Smiling Friends humor. Relatable and realistic situations or conversations juxtaposed with absurd conditions and characters, snappy animation and humor, and a wonderful joke at the very end of the episode that ties it all together in one final laugh.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 7: The Magical Red Jewel

For the penultimate episode, the premise is pretty simple. The A plot consists of Mr. Boss and Pim going to Spamtopia to buy a magic gem. This is a dynamic that has not been much explored to date. The B-episode plot follows Charlie and Allan tracking down Mr. Boss’s baby Jason.

However, I felt conflicted about this episode. On the one hand, most of the jokes landed on me and the humor is still on point. Mr. Boss and Pim’s quest explored a unique character dynamic we hadn’t seen before, while still being funny.

Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 8: Pim finally turns green

This episode was a great end to the season. I was having so much fun watching it that I forgot about the insanely inaccurate synopsis.

Sometimes the episodes veer so far from the title and synopsis, but you end up staying just for the ride. It’s really fun to experience. This episode mainly follows Pim as he inadvertently brings to life an ugly snowman with a radioactive daffodil. Pim and Rotten the snowman form a bond until Rotten learns of death and falls into an existential crisis. Eventually, however, Rotten overcomes his fear of death and enjoys a day at the beach. In Smiling Friends fashion, things go wrong, but in a messy and fun way.

This episode was a very fun way to end things. I just wonder what would happen if Pim actually turned green. Regardless, I’m really glad we got this episode to end the season on a high note. This is a strong contender for my favorite episode of the entire season.
Season overall and final thoughts
Overall, I enjoyed this season, but I’m not sure if it tops the first one. The first season had more memorable moments overall for me. But the second season brings a lot of fun to the table because the episodes aren’t afraid to be more experimental and chaotic.

Do I think the second season is better than the first? No. I think the quality of the series has stagnated? Not really, I think this season’s standout hits were just as amazing as the first, if not better. Each episode had great jokes and twists that kept me on my toes, so even the parts I liked less were still enjoyable.

If I were to rank the episodes from my most favorite to my least favorite, it would probably be 8, 1, 3, 6, 2, 4, 5, and finally 7. None of the episodes were outright “bad” by any means. but I just liked some episodes more than others. And that’s okay, maybe some people liked episode seven a lot more than I did. And if the show is still entertaining and makes viewers smile, then I’d say the season was a success.
