I have always considered grilling to be the “man’s job”. Whenever we are grilling for dinner, I get everything ready so all my husband has to do is slap it on the grill.

I have been craving steak but knew my husband had meetings at night which left any and all grilling up to me. I mean, really, how hard can it be?

I was totally right. I turned that baby on, and the next thing I knew I was a grilling champ. I felt a little bit like I could have been on Iron Chef with all the flames, smoke, and meat.

Anyway, this recipe is so simple and delicious that it can make anyone feel like a fabulous chef. If I can do it, so can you.

Could I add vegetables to these?

Grilled vegetables are the best vegetables. Forget steamed, broiled, or raw. Grilled vegetables are my thing and you will die over how delicious grilled vegetables are with these kabobs. We added pepper and red onion, but you could add any veggie.

Here are a few other favorite vegetables to put on the kabobs. We recommend trying:

  • Yellow Squash
  • Zucchini Squash
  • Red Onion
  • Asparagus
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • Orange or Yellow Bell Pepper

These are also very yummy with pineapple on them as well. We don’t really recommend marinating the pineapple, but just put it on the skewer, right before you grill it.

Can Shish Kabobs Be Made the Night Before Grilling?

Shish kabobs can indeed be prepared the night before grilling. This practice allows the kabobs to marinate for an extended period, enhancing their flavors. Additionally, preparing them in advance saves time and simplifies the grilling process the next day, as all the ingredients are already cut up and marinated. When you’re ready to grill, you simply need to thread the skewers and slap them on the grill.

What cut of steak would work best for this recipe?

I love all steaks. I don’t know if there has been a cut of steak I have met, and didn’t love. However, some cuts of steak work better for kabobs than others.

For this recipe, I used a sirloin steak. However, you could make these with just about any cut of steak.

I feel like sirloin steak can really soak up the flavor of the marinade, and is also a little thicker that it will still stay juicy and cook perfectly, in the same amount of time the vegetables will be done cooking.

The sirloin steak buys you a little more time, to thoroughly cook the mushrooms all the way through.

  • 1 green bell pepper cut into bite sized pieces
  • 8 ounces mushrooms cut into bite sized pieces

Instructions

  • Whisk all marinade ingredients together in a bowl or container. Place pieces of steak in the marinade and pierce with a fork to allow juices to soak into the meat.Cover and store in the refrigerator for at least three hours (the longer the better!).Let skewers soak in water for up to 30 minutes before grilling to prevent them from burning. After meat has marinated, slide alternating pieces of meat, onion, bell pepper and mushrooms onto skewers. Heat grill to medium-high heat and grill for 8-10 minutes, or until done.

We made these tonight and they were super easy and yummy! I have 3 kiddo's ages 11,9 and 8, my husband loved it. I had everyone make their own so it went quickly for us, however 8 minutes on the grill was too long and the meat was a little tough. Next time we will try 6-7 minutes. Thanks for a great recipe!

FAQs

Do you marinate the vegetables with the meat for kabobs? ›

I marinade the steak and veggies, but put veggies on separate skewers from the steak, so I can cook them to the correct doneness. Use your favorite vegetables of choice."

What is the best tender meat for kabobs? ›

Relatively tender, without a need for extensive marinating, Sirloin (from top to tip) is lean and fits into a balanced diet — plus, it's budget-friendly . Other good beef choices for kabobs are Flat Iron or Strip Steak and even Tenderloin.

How much meat do you need for kabobs per person? ›

Aim for about 6 ounces of meat per person. You could split that up into 2 skewers or one. I recommend two, that way those who are super hungry can have two, those who are not can just eat one. That's about 3 one-ounce chunks of meat per skewer.

What are the best vegetables for shish kabobs? ›

Aim for a variety of color and for veggies that will hold their shape well. Some of my favorites for kabobs are: bell peppers (any color), zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, onions (I like red onions, but yellow onions or shallots are great too), and tomatoes (smaller cherry or grape tomatoes).

Can you marinate veggies and steak together? ›

"This is one of those do ahead (if you want) recipes that's easy, yet very tasty. I like making it on the bar-b-que in my Mesh Chef's Pan and serving over steamed rice. The filet is just a preference of mine, but I'm sure you can use just about any beef cut you prefer."

Why are my beef kabobs tough? ›

There won't be nearly enough time for fat to render and connective tissue to properly dissolve. Meat that is tough often becomes fairly rubbery when cooked quickly on a skewer.

What is the best affordable steak for kabobs? ›

"Sirloin steaks are a great budget-friendly option chock-full of flavor," said Jerome, who also suggests cutting sirloin steaks into smaller pieces for another budget-stretching, grill preparation: kabobs. "Top sirloin steaks are a great option to have something lean but also tender and flavorful for your beef kabobs."

What is the most common meat in kebabs? ›

The traditional meat for kebabs is most often lamb meat, but regional recipes may include beef, goat, chicken, fish, or even pork (depending on whether or not there are specific religious prohibitions).

Is 4 pounds of meat enough for 8 people? ›

If meat is the central part of your dish, you will most likely want 1/2 of a pound per person. When cooking for 8 people, you'll want 4 pounds of meat. On a typical week night when you're cooking for just 2, 1 pound of boneless meat should be sufficient.

How many pounds of meat is enough for 2 people? ›

A question we often get is “How much meat do I need?” The starting rule of thumb is: Boneless Meat: 1/2 lb. per person for adults and 1/4 lb. per person for children.

What is the difference between a shish kabob and a kabob? ›

Kebab is either shaved or sliced meat from a rotating vertical spit. That's döner kebab. Next most popular is shish kebab, made usually from minced meat (lamb, pork) and grilled over hot charcoal. Shashlik is made usually with cubes of marinated pork meat, often with bits of vegetables.

What do you soak shish kabobs in? ›

While 30 minutes is the minimum, it's best to plan ahead and soak your bamboo skewers overnight in water. It takes a long time for the skewers to soak up the water, but well-soaked skewers, which are slow to give up their moisture, will last longer on the grill without burning up.

Should you marinate vegetables before grilling? ›

The most amazing grilled vegetables are charred on the BBQ or roasted in the oven, then marinated in a lovely lemony herb garlic dressing. Unlike meat, it's better to marinate vegetables AFTER cooking because they absorb flavour so much more effectively when they're hot.

Can you use marinade on vegetables? ›

While our marinades taste great on any meat, don't forget to show your vegetables and sides some TLC. Allegro Marinades are packed with flavor, so they're the perfect addition to spice up any dish.

What do you soak kabobs in? ›

Simply fill the dish with water — the water temperature does not matter — and set them aside to absorb the moisture. For most recipes, 30 minutes is the soak time sweet spot. Quick-cooking skewered appetizers, like this antipasto appetizer , are only on the grill for a short time.
